Gosh. I’m very reluctant to be the first to answer this question! I don’t really know anyone, so let’s look at their profiles … Kate works with fossils, that’s very cool … Herbert I had a discussion with this evening about pizza, so I know he’s cool … Goli works on ovarian cancer, which is kind of like working on leukemia, so that’s cool … wow, Brad’s an astronomer! I think Brad wins. 😉
All of the other scientists work to understand our world; all of them do important work.
* Kate looks at our past and why we have a skeleton.
* Chris looks at leukemia (did you know every 46 minutes, an Australian is diagnosed with leukemia or other related blood disorder?)
* Brad is looking at how the universe is formed, what is it made of.
* Goli is looking at improving ovarian cancer treatments. Five year survival rates for Australian women with ovarian cancer has improved from 33% to 40 % (from 1982-1987 to 2000-2006) – I am sure Goli would be improving that further.
(I will not be scientific and quote my sources here as my answer will become even longer! If you want to know my sources, please ask me)
EDIT: I forgot to say who I think deserves to win the most. I would say Kate as there isn’t enough exposure in public on fossils and their understanding. Most fossils I know focuses on dinosaurs and what they may look like. The other research areas are important but they already have more exposure.
I don’t envy you guys having to make a choice. I think everyone is contributing to scientific knowledge in a positive way and doing something to improve our understanding of the world. I think finding a cure for cancer is going to help people the most so I’d go for Goli.
Well I wish we could all win. We all want to do great thing with the money, and science is so poorly funded, any little bit help! A vote for anyone is a win for science.
Ooohhh, that’s tough! In our zone, Chris has a great sense of humour and works on cancer, like me, so that’s bonus points. Herbert is clearly passionate about teaching. Kate is a palentologist, which you don’t come across all that often. And Brad has a beagle named Bagel, which is just funny 🙂
