Question: Hi, what do you consider to be the best evidence for the Big Bang and also is the Big Bang Theory supported by scientifically verifiable data or is simply as the name suggests, a theory? Thanks.

  1. The Big Bang Theory, while is a theory, has a wealth of observational evidence for it, such as calculations of the age of the Universe, measuring the distance to galaxies, measurements of elements in the Universe, and studying the formation of galaxies. The best evidence is something called the Cosmic Microwave Background, usually referred to as the CMB. The Cosmic Microwave Backgound is a measurement of how hot the Universe was 370,000 years after the Big Bang (the Universe is 13.7 billion years old). Not only did scientists measured the temperature, but the Big Bang Theory predict that the temperature would vary across the Universe (it would not be one constant temperature), which is exactly what was seen.
