is there any way it can grow or come back without surgery????

Cartilage will grow naturally but it is very slow. Unfortunately, the damaged cartilage will not move out of the way for new ones, so you would have to do some kind of surgery to remove damaged cartilage first – even if artificial cartilage can be grown.

Hi,
It is possible to take out some healthy cartilage if there is some remaining in the knee and grow it then do a graft to replace damaged cartilage.

You have to ask your doctor to see if you stop playing netball, how much would that save your cartilage in your knee and balance that with playing netball. We don’t know how bad it is and I am not a medical doctor to diagnose. Athletes who suffer injuries will sit out the rest of the season (and even a complete season) to recover. Do what you can to put less stress on your knees to prevent less damage and allow some time to regenerate some of your cartilage. There is always the surgery option (which one don’t want to take unless you have to).

I believe that cartilage can be repaired with surgery. Maybe strengthened with physical therapy and anti-inflammatory meds?

I know it is hard to repair cartilage, and when you tear it, scars form which aren’t as strong as the original cartilage (this happened to my knee).

There is a lot of research into cartilage repair using mesenchymal stem cells (a type of cell in the bone marrow that can produce, among other things, cartilage cells) to re-grow the cartilage. It is very preliminary, but I believe it shows promise.

Right now, like the others has said, we do not have a way to restore the damaged cartilage, although there are treatments to restore the surface (which require surgery) to prevent further damage and to provide relief from pain. Even after surgery, there will be a period of rehabilitation as cartilage takes a while to get used to the repair. Cartilage does not have blood vessels so it will heal very slowly, hence the long period of rehabilitation..
