Different parts of America are very different from each other. California is most similar to Australia–much more laid back with a beachy vice. The East coast (Washington DC) is a bit more fast-paced and very cold. I prefer Australia though–the people are nicer and the weather is better.
In America, they have different terms for school – like Elementary (for Primary), Middle School (which is only a few years) then High School. There wasn’t Middle School for me when I grew up in Australia, so it was interesting to hear that it could be 2 or 3 years you go to a different school between the elementary and high school. The big yellow buses look the same as the movies.
I grew up watching shows like 21 Jump Street, which show unflattering images of high school, and when I got to high school I was disappointed (or, actually, pleased) that it was nothing like that. Then I thought that American high schools must be different to Australian ones, but when I went to America, I found it to be pretty similar to Australia. So, while I’m sure that there are schools that are like that, it is certainly not the case everywhere in America.
Regarding Herbert’s answer, I think the Middle School system that they have in America works really well – students from Year 6-8 (I think) deserve to have their own school that has neither Year 1s or Year 12s in it. I don’t know why we haven’t adopted something similar in Australia.

Like Goli said, it varies in the US what it is like depending on where you are.
