I have been in my current job for nearly five years, and the job before that for five years as well. Before that, I was a PhD student (four years), and Honours student (1 year) and a University student (3 years). Before that I was in high school, but I don’t think we need to keep going. 🙂
I don’t know how to answer your question though because I don’t know when I became a “scientist”. Being a scientist is not a job, it’s a way of thinking about the world (only believing what you have evidence to support, and always thinking critically), and I think in that sense I have always been a scientist.
I’ve worked in the job I have now for 5 years and have been doing research for 10 years as a scientists and before that I was still doing research but as a PhD student. It took me a while to work out what I wanted to do. I have always liked discovering things and questioning things but it was a while before I realized that this interest could be translated into a career
